Cohabitation

In recent years it has become more common for people to choose to live together rather than to marry.

People who choose to live together often refer to their relationship as a common law marriage. Some mistakenly believe that they have the same rights as a married couple. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

If you purchase a property with your partner consider signing a cohabitation agreement. This states what should happen to your money and assets on the breakdown of your relationship. This should avoid the costs and stress associated with disputes at an emotional time.

If you are separating from your partner, you may wish to contact us to advise you on your position. We can advise you on the steps that you should immediately take to protect yourself as well as the likely outcome.
